Settlers first arrived in the area around Leander in 1845. Their initial settlement was called Bagdad, but the name was changed in 1882 when the city of Leander was founded on land purchased by the settlers from the Austin and Northwestern Railroad Co. Leander's new name was derived from railroad official Leander "Catfish" Brown. The city was finally incorporated in 1978.

Over the years, Leander has grown into a city with a population of nearly 30,000. Leander is located in both Williamson and Travis Counties and is considered part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. One of the earliest intact burial sites in the U.S., dated nearly 13,000 years ago, is located near Leander. The woman found at the burial site is named the Leanderthal Lady.
